pingu-, pingue-, pingui-

(Latin: pinguis, fat, grease)

pinguecula, pinguicula (s), pingueculae (pl)
1. A yellow triangular thickening of the bulbar (any rounded mass of tissue shaped like a bulb) conjunctiva on the inner and outer margins of the cornea. The conjunctiva is a thin clear moist membrane that coats the inner surfaces of the eyelids and the outer surface of the eye.

The base of the triangle is toward the limbus (area in the eyeball where the cornea and sclera meet). The yellow color is due to an increase in elastic fibers.

2. A yellow spot on the white of the eye, usually toward the inside (nose side) of the eye, associated with aging.

It looks fatty (in Latin the word pinguiculus means "fattish"), and is the result of an accumulation of connective tissue.
